Assistant Professor:
Environmental Sustainability Geographer

The Department of Geography at San Diego State University (SDSU) is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in the areas of Geography and Environmental Sustainability whose research, teaching, and outreach addresses issues of sustainability, resource management (water, food, energy, land), climate, development, and/or policy, with a focus on human-environment interactions from a human geography perspective. The candidate is expected to develop independent, externally-funded research and will teach and develop innovative curriculum at undergraduate and graduate levels in environmental policy, sustainability, and resource management. The hire will advise students in the Geography Department’s master’s degree programs and the joint SDSU-UCSB PhD in Geography.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a doctoral degree in geography or related field with specialization in the interconnections between sustainability, resource management, and environmental policy, as well as a research and funding record of accomplishment that demonstrates their ability to establish a clear program of research. A history of experience with extramural funding is preferred. Ideally, candidates would have experience conducting research in interdisciplinary environments and experience with multiple methodological approaches in human geography (e.g. surveys, interviews, focus groups, participatory research, spatial modeling, etc.).
Teaching and student mentoring experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels is desired but not required. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate level, including master and doctoral students in geography.

The Department of Geography at San Diego State University (SDSU) is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in Urban Geography to begin in Fall 2024. We are specifically looking for candidates whose research addresses social and/or racial inequalities and their relationships to individual, community, or population wellbeing from a geographic perspective using qualitative methods.
Candidates must have a demonstrated primary research focus on urban geography and a commitment to working with diverse groups through research, teaching, mentoring, and service. We are especially interested in people with expertise in areas such as migration, race and racism, social and economic inequality, crime and policing, urban governance, gentrification, urbanization and urban development, environmental and social justice in urban settings anywhere in the world, including along the Mexico-US border.
