Thomas Herman Featured Speaker at National Council for the Social Studies Conference

Thomas HermanDr. Thomas Herman, adjunct faculty member and Director of the California Geographic Alliance, was the featured speaker for the Geography Community at the NCSS Conference in San Francisco from Nov. 15-19.  Tom's talk was entitled "Beyond Where: Geographic Inquiry, Trial by Space, and Democratic Citizenship."  To challenge social studies educators to move beyond the use of geographic inquiry to establish context and utilize geographic inquiry for purposes of explanation and decision-making, he pointed out that Where?” is not the crucial question in geography.  Exploration of patterns and processes allow us to understand why people, things, and events are distributed as they are.  Interrogation of the social construction and political functions of geographic spaces is a means to generate deep insights and inform democratic citizenship.
