Fall 2017 Department Events
While our primary mission is to promote female participation and empowerment in the field of Geography, SWIG also creates a supportive space for students who may experience obstacles due to their race, ethnicity, sexuality and other forms of social difference.
Do I have to be a feminist woman to join?
We hope to create an open, inclusive space and encourage participation from people of all life circumstances. You don't have to be a woman or identify as a feminist to participate in SWIG.
What do we do?
This year we hope to sponsor a few lunch lightening talks (food provided) on relevant topics, a colloquium in the department, and even plan to sponsor a conference in the Spring. We will have a couple meetings a semester (with food...I hope everyone likes bagels) to talk about relevant topics.
If you would like to participate in the organization as an officer, please email me. We need 5 positions filled to be recognized as an official registered student organization. Positions open include: Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Marketing/PR.
All undergraduates are invited to come meet with your Department of Geography Undergraduate Representative! Grab a coffee and help us make this academic year a success by voicing your ideas and getting your department-related questions answered.
Come out and show your support for our native ecosystem by doing a canyon cleanup! I Love a Clean San Diego (ILACSD) and San Diego Canyonlands are partnering together this year to clean Dennery Canyon! Help in the tasks of trash clean up, removal of invasive species, and community outreach. There are other stewardship and wildlife habitat restoration opportunities as well.
Spots are reserved ahead of time so the deadline for sign ups will be Thursday morning, September 14, at 10 AM. In addition, every participant for Coastal Cleanup Day must sign a waiver (see below). If anyone is under 18, a parent/legal guardian will need to sign.
Contact Empress Holiday for the waiver sheet and any questions or concerns.
Come join us for some light snacks and open discussion.
Join us for a morning hike at one of San Diego’s most beautiful hiking spots: Torrey Pines! No lectures, no powerpoints slides, and no notes: just overall good fun and great views with your fellow undergrads! There are various trails we can take, but overall difficulty level is easy and is a great location fo beginners. Come prepared to get wet as the hike back to our cars is along the beach.
There are two options fo parking: paying to park in the lot or attempt to find parking in the free stalls before the entrance of the paid lot. The latter of the two is the more difficult option, especially on a Sunday morning. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, as well as comfortable shoes and clothing. We will meet at the ‘Torrey Pines State Park’ sign at the bottom to the large hill.
We will begin early so as to not be out when it is too hot in the day (hike to take approximately 2 hours) so please try to arrive on time. If there are any questions, feel free to contact your undergrad reps! We look forward to seeing everyone out in the field!
