  1. Click on the Digital Download (*.gz) file. If the file opens up in the browser rather than prompting you to save the file, go to the File menu in your browser and select "Save As".
  2. Browse to the directory where you'd like to save the file. Save as type: Text File (*.txt) and name the file whatever you'd like. Name it with a .e00 extension (i.e. coast.e00).

Once the ArcInfo interchange file is downloaded, use the proper import tool, utility, or command to bring the data set into your GIS.

ArcView 3.x - Import71 Utility
ArcGIS 8.x/9.x - Import to Coverage in the ArcToolBox Conversion Tools folder
GRASS 6.x - command
QGIS - AVCimport utility
